Statement on passing of Cardinal Law
Bishop Mitchell Rozanski has issued the following statement.
“News of the passing of Cardinal Bernard Law, former Archbishop of Boston, serves as a sad reminder of our Church’s past failure to protect children and the most vulnerable.
And while our faith community has made much progress in implementing protections and procedures to safe guard against a repeat of past failures, for those who were victimized the pain remains very real, and perhaps heightened in light of news coverage surrounding Cardinal Law’s death.
Let me therefore reiterate my profound regret and sincere apology to all victims of abuse. I pray for you and your families regularly.
Mindful that we cannot erase what happened to you, I make a solemn promise to remain steadfast in our commitment to protect all entrusted to our care.
I also urge those for whom this news will be the cause of renewed and increased anxiety to seek help. Our diocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection stands ready to offer guidance at (413) 452-0624, by confidential toll free number at 800-842-9055 or by e-mail at p.mcmanamy@diospringfield.org.”
