Funeral Arrangements for Bishop Emeritus Maguire Announced

SPRINGFIELD-  Officials of the Diocese of Springfield have announced funeral arrangements for retired Bishop Joseph F. Maguire.


Bishop Maguire, who served as Bishop of Springfield from 1977 until his retirement in 1992, passed away on Nov. 23 at his residence in Springfield he was 95 years old. (see story at iobserve.org)

Bishop Maguire’s body will be received at St. Michael’s Cathedral 254 State St., Springfield on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 1:30 p.m. followed by a wake which continue throughout the afternoon and into the early evening.

At 7 p.m. Sunday there will be a Vigil Prayer Service.  Springfield Bishop Mitchell T. Rozanski will preside and diocesan vicar general, Msgr. Christopher Connelly, will preach. Music for this service will be provided by a choir of diocesan priests.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Monday, Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. at the cathedral church. Bishop Rozanski will be the main celebrant and retired Bishop Timothy A. McDonnell will preach. Bishops from throughout the region are expected to attend.  Members of the bishop’s family will serve as readers. Readings and hymns to be used as part of this funeral Mass were personally selected by Bishop Maguire.

Entombment will immediately follow at the St. Michael’s Mausoleum, 1601 State St., Springfield.

Diocesan spokesperson, Mark E. Dupont, said there will be open seating at the vigil prayer service and a considerable amount of open seating available at the funeral. “We are preparing for a large turnout, with an overflow area inside the Bishop Marshall Center,” Dupont told iobserve.org.

Parking will be available at a number of surrounding  lots, with handicapped spaces provided behind the cathedral.

In addition there will be live coverage of the funeral and final prayers at the mausoleum through a joint effort of the diocesan Catholic Communications ministry and local NBC affiliate WWLP.  Live streaming will also be available through the diocesan website, www.diospringfield.org.
